The Sun Destroyers
Published by Ace Books, 1973
This book, printed as part of an "Ace Double" edition that also included the
novel A Yank at Valhalla by Edmond Hamilton, is a fixup novelisation containing
four interconnected stories about sentient nebulae that were previously published in the
magazines Astonishing Stories and Imagination. The story "Revolt of
the Devil Star" is reprinted here under the author's original title "Rebel of
the Darkness".
This book contains the following novelettes: "Into the Darkness", "Daughter
of Darkness", "Abyss of Darkness" and "Rebel of the Darkness".
The Men and the Mirror
Published by Ace Books, 1973
This book contains a series of three interconnected stories, featuring the characters
Colbie and Deverel, that were previously published in the magazine Astounding Stories.
Also included in this volume are three additional tales, loosely connected to the series,
that first appeared in the magazines Astounding Stories and Amazing Stories.
In the first two of these latter three stories, the characters' names were changed several
times for editorial reasons, as the author explains in his introduction to this
collection. The final story, "And Then There Was One", has the
least in common with the original Colbie and Deverel stories. It does, however, pose a
scientific problem identical to that described in "At the Center of Gravity",
and features a different solution to the same physical dilemma.
This book contains the following short stories and novelettes: "At the Center of
Gravity", "Jupiter Trap", "The Men and the Mirror", "The Fly
So High", "The Bottled Men" and "And Then There Was One".

This story is loosely based on "The Outlaw Strider", an unpublished fourth tale
featuring the characters Colbie and Deverel that was rejected by John W. Campbell, the
editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Several years later, Rocklynne
rewrote the story, retaining the scientific concept and formula, but changing the
characters' names and retitling it "They Fly So High". This latter title was a
reference to the author's plans to make it the first in a projected series of four tales,
with the others being called "Nearly Reach the Sky", "Then Like My
Dreams", and "They Fade and Die". These three stories were never written,
due to Rocklynne's retirement from writing until he returned to the field in the late
1960s.

of literature, a number of online sources were consulted, not the least of which were The Internet Speculative Fiction Database
and Philip Stephensen-Payne's Galactic Central
website, the latter a home to the Fictionmags Index and the various Locus Press indexes.
Another major source of information was Douglas Melville's The Work of Ross Rocklynne:
An Annotated Bibliography & Guide, an outstanding reference work that was
published by Borgo Press in 1989.
Addenda:
It is worth noting that "Ross Rocklynne" was in fact a pseudonym, as
the author's real name was Ross Louis Rocklin.
As well as the literary works listed above, Rocklynne also sold a number of articles,
essays, poems and autobiographical sketches to a variety of professional,
semi-professional and amateur magazines. He had a number of letters published in science
fiction periodicals and was a particularly prolific contributor to genre fanzines; as a
young man he was very active in science fiction fandom. Details on his nonfiction
writings, and information about unpublished stories, can be found in Douglas Melville's
aforementioned book.
Furthermore, a good deal of the author's fiction has been reprinted in foreign language
editions; listing these is beyond the scope of this webpage.
Notwithstanding several notable exceptions, I have, for the most part, not included here
in this bibliography the various ebook publications (particularly chapbooks) in which
Rocklynne's work has been reissued.
Finally, several of the author's stories are now in the public domain and a few of these
are available to read online at the Project
Gutenberg website.
